Apartments, retail space in Weymouth’s Columbian Square

WEYMOUTH – Construction of 30 apartments and two commercial spaces is currently underway on the site of a former bank in Columbian Square.

Ballybreen Ventures and CMK Development Partners are building 30 residential units and two commercial units at 88 Pleasant Street. The new building, called The Vault at 88, will measure 29,950 square feet.

Gerry Kavanaugh, CEO of CMK Development Partners, said crews have demolished most of the old South Shore Bank building and work on the foundation and steel frame will begin in early 2022. It’s expects construction to be completed by March 2023.

Kavanaugh said Columbian Square merchants have been very supportive of the project, which will coincide with the reconstruction of Columbian Square. This project will add a traffic light to Pleasant, Union and Columbian streets and other improvements.

“It will be the beginning of the renaissance of the place,” he said.

The four-storey building will feature a mix of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, three of which will be offered as affordable housing, and 61 parking spaces. The parking lot at the rear of the building is linked to Fogg Street, which will allow residents to walk to the hospital.

Kavanaugh said the South Shore hospital has “huge housing demands”, with many of its more than 5,000 employees seeking to live nearby for easy access to work.

“We are convinced that this building will be rented before it is even occupied,” he said.

Kavanaugh said they don’t yet have tenants for the retail space, but he expects a cafe will occupy one of the storefronts, which will each be around 1,000 square feet. .

“We’ve already had a lot of interest,” he said.
