Austria: Vienna museum exhibition tackles delicate issues of Nazi memorabilia | News | DW

An exhibition opened in Vienna on Sunday will showcase everyday Nazi-era artefacts found by Austrians in the aftermath of World War II.

Based on the theme “What to do with the vestiges of National Socialism? the exhibition titled “Hitler: from the cellar to the museum” opens at the House of Austrian History.

What is in the exhibition?

A description of the exhibit on the museum’s website notes: “Objects related to National Socialism are found in different places and in different contexts – whether in one’s own basement, at flea markets or on a online portal, in the estate of relatives or even in the waste. “

Director Monika Sommer told dpa that almost every week the museum receives objects from the Nazi era.

Objects in the exhibition include a bayonet from the Wehrmacht, the so-called “Knipseralben” (snapshot albums) of soldiers at the front and a microphone allegedly used by Adolf Hitler in the city of Linz during his first speech. after the annexation of Austria.

For decades, the microphone has been installed in a regional studio of the public broadcaster ORF, Sommer said.

With “Nazi Dreck” on display in Vienna, albeit in a modest contextualized form, the museum which hosts a small exhibit of artefacts asks, “Do they belong to a museum? “

A place in a museum?

When displaying these objects, the museum’s description of the exhibit asks, “Do they belong to a museum?” The museum is not certain.

The description continues: “Should we get rid of it?” Is it justified to sell them on a flea market or on the Internet? What is remembrance, what is transfiguration and what is reactivation?

By probing these questions, the museum “questions social responsibility in dealing with relics of National Socialism and discusses how these things can strengthen democratic consciousness in the present.”
