NH’s 83-year-old powerlifter competing in Maine this weekend

An 83-year-old man who trains at the Epping Zoo will compete in a powerlifting event on Saturday at Old Orchard Beach baseball stadium in Maine.

Peter Hubbard retired from the Navy and said he was still fit, but only started powerlifting in his early sixties. He would like to motivate other seniors to take up a sport or a physical hobby.

“They don’t have to lift like I do. It’s a health issue and as I always say, it’s about being able to bend over and hug your grandchild at 80,” he said. said Hubbard.

At the Maine State Powerlifting Championship on Saturday, Hubbard aims to be able to bench 210 pounds. It weighs 173.

Hubbard, who lives in Candia, has been married for 16 years to a woman named Nona whom he met at the gym when he was a personal trainer. She is 59 and hopes to gain 145 pounds on Saturday.

Hubbard said the weigh-ins take place at 8 a.m. on Saturday and the competition begins at 9 a.m.
